The charger itself works great but the AC adapter (which plugs into the wall) suffers from a defect that causes it to melt and stop working if you leave it plugged in for too long. I've gone through two so far and am hesitant on ordering another one. The Skil Driver that I have is AWESOME so it's unfortuneate that the recharger is so awful. (Luckily for you, not neccessarily for me) you can't buy this particular model Skil Driver anymore - those of us unlucky enough to own one however, we're stuck with a pretty awful product.
I did just what they said not to, I tried to charge the old battery and it killed the charger. The screwdriver stopped working and the batteries stopped charging up. I bought a set (scewdriver and flashlight) about 15 years ago. I bought 2 more chargers and everything is great. I kept the flaslight hoping I could do something with it. I found these batteries and a charger. The flashlight works great and keeps a charge for a long time. I just rotate the batteried through for a periodic charge.
I ordered the Skil 92042 FlexCharge 3.6 volt battery charger from amazon and it didn't work I emailed the seller Grady's Ace Hardware and never heard back from them I offered to send it back at my expense if they would send me another. So I feel like I bought a dead horse and would never order from the seller again.
Amazon transposed the part numbers and shipped me the wrong item. I ordered No. 92490 and received No. 92942
Fortunately, Amazon still has both available at reasonable prices. So, the downside is that these chargers have no self-protection against a shorted battery.
Even though I must shell out big bucks every few years to replace my higher voltage combo systems, I keep these little guys around since they are really handy and convenient for all the small jobs. When both my chargers stopped working simultaneously, I ordered another one which also immediately failed.
I've been using my FlexCharge drill and screwdriver systems for many years and really love them. Since I could not determine which one was the bad guy, I had to replace both and buy another charger.
Oops. Apparently one of the batteries was shorted and was blitzing the chargers.
If your charger dies, check the transformer and if it appears deformed, it was overheated and you need to replace both the charger and the batteries. I've stocked up on both and even bought a spare drill and driver for when replacements are no longer available.
